4Pretty easy to use and not too hard to clean.Jul 10, 2010
I am always quite skeptical about dog products like this but I needed something for my dogs to use while I am not home at my apartment. I decided to give this one a try and so far I am not regretting it. My dogs are used to going out on the porch to go to the bathroom so putting this outside on the patio helped them learn quicker that this is where you go. They don't make mistakes very often anymore after a couple weeks of training them on this and if they do, its generally my fault for not cleaning off the top of the grass often enough. The "scent" that the product advertised doesn't seem to have any effect on them at all other than when I first opened it and they jumped all over me to smell it but it didn't seem to encourage them at all to use it at first. The scent really didn't help do anything to encourage them at any point, only the training seemed to show them what to do. Cleaning its actually quite simple which surprised me for how simple it is. If you are not going to be able to clean the bottom tray of this thing at least every other day, I recommend getting the pads as they absorb the pee easier and can just be washed off thoroughly and thrown in the washing machine. The pad keeps the bottom tray from filling up faster and making a mess if you have to carry the whole thing to wherever you wash it off at. It is relatively small so if you mean for your dog to use this to take a number 2, you'll still need to pick them up at least everyday. If you are not lazy and will clean this up the number 2's everyday and clean out hte bottom tray every 3 or so days, then it works well. I made a makeshift barricade so that when my dogs went out on my deck, all they could do was walk on the pad. After about 2 weeks they started to understand and only went to the bathroom on the pad even after I removed the barricade. All in all I am satisfied with its function although I think the price for the simplicity of the product is still pretty steep.

4Great Product! HIghly Recommended for Potty TrainingJun 21, 2010
I got my toy poodle at 8 weeks and began training him on wee wee pads. My intent was to train him on the Portable Dog Potty after he got the hang of the pads. I had the Dog Potty in a corner and to my surprise, he started using the Dog Potty on his own and in about 2-3 weeks I was able to remove the wee wee pads all together. I highly recommend this product. I purchased it from Hammacher Schlemmer for the same price but I believe this one is the same maker. My only complaint is that as I live in a small NYC apartment, I am limited on space and have the Dog Potty in a somewhat hidden corner of my living room -- but I can smell the attractant which isn't very attractive to humans.

1beyond useless- actually gross, poorly-made, and infuriatingMar 07, 2010
Our need: we have somewhat flexible schedules, but the puppy still ends up home alone for way too many hours several days a week.
We wanted something more eco friendly - reusable - than puppy pads so we tried this based on the great reviews.

Other useful info: we've had it for a month during which time the puppy has gone from 11 pounds to 25 pounds. The problems have been consistent though...but, if you have like a five pound dog, this might be fine.

Pros/Successes: none.

Cons/Disasters:
First, it is not deep enough to hold a day's worth of pee so it overflows.
Second, the various layers do not hold together so when he steps on and off it, they all slide around.
Third, it smells so, so, so terrible. We take it out in the backyard and hose it down regularly, but even if you bring it in that morning, by the time I get home around 4, the entire room smells like a urinal.
Finally, the attractive grass-like top? He chews it. There are pieces of fake grass everywhere.

5Good dog potty solutionDec 23, 2009
I got this potty for my 5 pound Pomeranian. We live in an apartment 4 stories up and to train a puppy with a small bladder, it just isn't realistic to take him all the way down to the grass. Especially in the winter with it is around zero degrees outside. He was potty trained to go on pads before in a certain corner. I simply placed the potty in there and he took to it right away. He will still go on pads when we are traveling to other houses, and he will also go potty outside on the grass if he is out there and the need arises. The hardest part is cleaning it - I got the reusable pads and they work great. I wipe down the tray with bleach and also the grate with bleach and hot water. I then rinse out the mat with scalding water several times in the bathtub. I pat dry everything with a designated towel and it is as good as new. I would prefer to have two grass matts so that one can air dry but just can't afford one right now. All in all, I had no trouble teaching my dog to go on the matt and I think it is a great product!

5A solution for dogs at sea!!Oct 05, 2009
We've always had to leave our dogs at home when we anchor our boat out overnight because of the potty issue. Our 14 year old dogs were never going to take to an artificial solution, but our new puppy took to the PupHead like it was the most natural thing in the world. This past rainy weekend, while all our dock buddies were traipsing up to a patch of grass in the rain with their dogs, we stepped out on our covered cockpit with the puppy, said "Go potty", and it was over! We're the envy of the dock! And thank goodness, since the new puppy has to go potty 5 times a night!

I liked it so much, I wanted two more for the house. Apparently I placed my order twice. Gulf Coast thought the double order looked odd, so they actually called me to confirm what I really wanted. They averted the problem before it ever happened, and now I don't have to worry about returning the two I never meant to order.

Great product, great service, great company. And Happy Dogs!

PS: Easy clean up, and practically odor free sitting on an open-air cockpit.

UPDATE: We added a second puppy, and she took to it, just fine, too. But where Suki had no problems, Aiko seems to think anything the size of a Pup Head is an acceptable potty spot. That includes door mats, bath mats, sink mats, towels spread out on the floor, etc., but doesn't seem to extend to area rugs, runners or circular rugs. Just anything shaggy in roughly the same size and shape. Go figure.
